Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, at its “Surprise and Shine” event in Cupertino, marking the first keynote address by new CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook.

The Duo opens like a passport into a 7.6-inch display, 80% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro. It supports the Apple Pencil, a feature previously limited to iPads, and allows users to split the screen between two apps or two windows of the same site. The device starts at USD 1,999 and will be available from October 23, with preorders opening October 17.

Alongside the Duo, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, priced at USD 1,199 and USD 1,299 respectively, with upgrades to battery life, camera and performance. The Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback. Both models are available for preorder from September 12 and will ship September 18. The event also included updates to AirPods and other existing product lines.

The Duo represents Apple’s most significant physical redesign of the iPhone since it dropped the home button with the iPhone X in 2017, and the biggest shift in form factor since the original iPhone launched in 2007.

“The Duo will redefine the experience of using a foldable phone,” said John Ternus, CEO, Apple.

The launch also sets the tone for Ternus’s tenure, a mechanical engineer by training who spent most of his Apple career on the hardware and product side before succeeding Cook.
