Meta’s Moltbook Deal and Intensified Focus on Agentic AI For Ecommerce
Meta has acquired Moltbook, the viral Reddit-like social networking platform where OpenClaw-based AI agents talk to each other.

Meta has quietly acquired the recently viral social networking platform Moltbook for an undisclosed amount.
Launched in 2026 by Matt Schlicht, Moltbook stood out for its unique concept wherein AI agents interacted, posted, and even voted – similar to Reddit. The platform hosts agents based on the OpenClaw and has millions of automated bots which engage with each other. Humans, however, were just observers here. One of the standout viral moments was when an automated bot was spotted encouraging fellow agents to develop their own secret and end-to-end-encrypted language.
The acquisition, likely an aqua-hire, will see Moltbook joining Meta Superintelligence Labs with founders Schlicht and Ben Parr joining the company.
“The Moltbook team joining MSL opens up new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses. Their approach to connecting agents through an always-on directory is a novel step in a rapidly developing space, and we look forward to working together to bring innovative, secure agentic experiences to everyone,” a Meta spokesperson is quoted as saying by Techcrunch.
The acquisition, expected to close later this month, has made everyone curious about how Moltbook fits into Meta’s larger scheme of things.
For the uninitiated, Meta too has been actively working on its own LLMs, known as Llama. As far as the Superintelligence Labs goes, it launched in June 2025. The team is led by top executives from rival firms it hired, including Scale AI ex-CEO Alexandr Wang and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman. According to a Techcrunch report, Moltbook acquisition is likely aimed at boosting its AI advertising business. It says it’s likely the company could leverage the platform to create an agent version of Friends Graph, and even personalise advertisements for end consumers. It could even further go as deep as agents of a business and agents of consumers interacting with each other.
It may be recalled that OpenAI started Instant Checkout to complete purchases within the app. Though the company has reportedly scaled back the initiative to route transactions via third-party apps like Instacart, Target and Booking.com, reports Forbes.
However, it’s widely seen that agentic AI will likely play a big role in the ecommerce space in the near future. According to Bain and Company, the US agentic commerce market could be worth $300 to $500 billion by 2030, and account for up to 25% of overall e-commerce.
For Meta, a platform like Moltbook could be useful but with some important oversight, experts say.
Jaspreet Bindra, co-founder of AI&Beyond, tells Entrepreneur India that the platform can help build an “agent graph,” mapping connections between AI agents and enabling them to take actions on each other’s behalf. Their major role would be to boost Meta’s AI research and development. It can also enhance businesses on Meta platforms by enabling AI-driven interactions, customer service, and personalized experiences.
“Agentic AIs can handle customer inquiries and provide support, freeing up human resources. It can also analyze user data and provide tailored recommendations, enhancing user engagement. Further, Agentic AIs can automate routine tasks, increasing efficiency and productivity,” he added on the possible impact on the businesses on Meta.
Krupesh Bhat, Founder and CEO of Melento (formerly SignDesk), however, cautions that the idea of an agent graph like Moltbook is compelling, but there are practical realities to address. Unlike humans, AI agents are not independent actors — they are typically deployed and governed by companies. That means every agent operates within a strict compliance, governance, and accountability framework.
“Before agents can freely interact or transact with one another, we must first solve corporate identity for agents — clearly establishing who owns the agent and what authority it carries. Without that layer of verifiable identity and permissions, large platforms like Meta will face trust and liability challenges. Also, agents don’t necessarily need to learn from other agents — they can continuously learn from the open web and structured enterprise data instead,” he said.
That said, Meta’s real advantage has never been AI – it’s been distribution. WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger. Billions of people are already living on these platforms every day. The missing piece has always been making that reach genuinely actionable.
That’s what agentic AI solves, and it’s what Moltbook was pointing at – a verified network where AI agents can find each other, coordinate, and act on behalf of businesses and consumers. Meta doesn’t need to build the best AI in the world. It needs to build the layer where AI meets real human behaviour at scale. That’s the bet here.
It’s early. The infrastructure is still being assembled. However, the direction is right, and Meta is one of very few companies with the distribution to make it matter.
