Sify’s Data Center Expansion: From ISP Pioneer to AI‑Ready Giant

Over the next decade, Sify Technologies evolved from a basic network and internet service provider into a major enterprise data center and co-location leader in India. The company built and expanded its data center facilities across key strategic metro locations, including Chennai, Airoli (Navi Mumbai), Noida (Delhi-NCR), and Bangalore.
…And the expansion spree is on.
India’s Data Center Demand
Fueled by record investments, supportive policy, and surging AI demand, India’s data center sector is now a critical national infrastructure.
Over the past decade, India’s data center demand has surged on the back of cloud adoption and digital transformation, expanding from about 400 MW of capacity before COVID to 1.6 GW by the end of last year. In just five years, the market grew fourfold, driven largely by enterprise needs. Since 2022, however, a new wave of AI‑led demand has begun to take shape, layering on top of existing infrastructure. This shift is expected to propel capacity to 7–8 GW by 2030.
“Already, Indian operators hold close to 3 GW in confirmed orders, slated for delivery within the next two years,” said Sharad Agarwal, CEO, Sify Infinit Spaces.
Much of India’s data center growth story is still unfolding, with a wave of projects under planning and development. The next phase will be defined by frontier labs, AI training, and inferencing workloads.
Sify’s expansion strategy is built around high‑density, sustainable campuses designed for AI workloads, backed by hybrid cloud solutions and ecosystem partnerships. With multiple campuses secured for up to 800 to 900 MW and new edge facilities in tier‑two cities, Sify is positioning itself not just as a service provider but as a key enabler of India’s digital ambition.
The Expansion Plan
In 2025, Sify announced a $5 billion by 2030 to expand its data centres and network infrastructure in India. A move that seemed audacious then, now looks modest against the scale of India’s data center ambition. The company’s focus is clear: to grow aggressively while safeguarding its 15 per cent market share, and expand to meet the most complex demands of the AI era.
“The announced investment at that time, seems modest now. We could probably do a lot more than that. Our plan definitely is to grow to the extent where we are maintaining our market share and continuing to get bigger to serve all kinds of complex AI needs,” the CEO added.
AI workloads are redefining infrastructure, with racks consuming over 200 KW and expectations rising toward 500 KW densities. Sify is building for this future, securing land and power permits across multiple campuses that can scale up to 800 MW.
“As of today, we have multiple campuses with secured land and power permits that can scale up to 800 megawatts. We’re continuing to acquire more land parcels, much of which are already under our control, to ensure that we hold over 15 per cent market share now, and continue to maintain and strengthen that position in a 10 or 20 gigawatt market,” he explained.
India’s data center story is no longer confined to metro hubs, it’s expanding into Tier II and III cities, where enterprise demand and state‑level policy support are converging. Sify’s strategy is to ensure presence in every state with at least one edge facility, turning regional centers into critical nodes of the national digital grid.
“Sify’s charter is to serve 100 per cent of the market, across hyperscalers, GPU cloud firms, enterprises, and edge use cases. That means going beyond the metros and building capacity where demand will emerge.”
Already, new facilities in Lucknow and Chandigarh, each starting at 4.8 MW with room to scale, signal how Tier II expansion is becoming integral to India’s AI‑ready infrastructure. These edge centers are quickly attracting enterprise and government workloads, proving their wider utility.
“Our idea is simple: every state should have at least one edge data center. Once launched, these facilities don’t just serve networks, they draw in enterprises, public sector demand, and become indispensable to local economies,” he said.
Many states have introduced data center‑specific policies that ease the process of setting up facilities. “The real test now lies in operationalizing these frameworks, moving toward true single‑window clearances. It’s still a work in progress, but state governments have shown strong intent and drive to build mechanisms that make data center expansion smoother and more predictable,” he continued.
India’s data center expansion is entering a decisive phase. With AI workloads reshaping infrastructure and Tier II cities joining the grid, operators like Sify are anchoring themselves as enablers of digital sovereignty. But investments, energy consumptions, GPUs, and other parameters play a huge role in deciding the fate of success.
The Energy Conundrum
India’s data center operators are keen to dispel the notion that their growth comes at the expense of community resources. Sify, for instance, stresses that its power draw is through dedicated high voltage express feeders 400 kV and 220 kV transmission lines built exclusively for data centers. These fresh infrastructure investments are funded by operators themselves, either upfront or through tariffs, ensuring that community supply remains untouched.
By absorbing the costs of new transmission lines, the industry shields consumers from any spill over burden. Expansion is happening on parallel tracks, not by siphoning off existing capacity. This approach underscores a broader narrative that data centers can scale without straining local grids, provided they invest in bespoke infrastructure and renewable offsets.
Sify highlights that it already sources 160 MW from renewables, with another 300 MW contracted or under development. This ensures that every new electron powering servers is matched by fresh capacity added to the grid. The ambition goes beyond solar and wind. Battery storage, pumped hydro, and even nuclear energy are being explored as part of a diversified portfolio. In effect, data centers can just not offset their footprint but actively drive innovation in India’s clean energy ecosystem.
By investing in generation, operators argue they neutralize community impact while accelerating the country’s renewable penetration.
“Every new electron that we are likely to use, we are also contributing towards the generation of that capacity for that electron. With closed‑loop chillers, our water consumption is no more than a mall’s minimal, contained, and community‑neutral,” said the CEO.
Indian data center operators are increasingly turning to grey water reuse and advanced cooling technologies to make their facilities more sustainable and AI-ready. Alongside this, they are deploying closed-loop chiller systems to minimize fresh water consumption and adopting direct-to-chip liquid cooling for GPU-heavy workloads, even retrofitting older centers to handle racks with over 50 kW capacity.
India’s strategic advantage lies in its supportive government policies around AI and data sovereignty, surplus renewable power capacity, and a largely domestic supply chain that ensures predictable execution. However, scaling remains challenging due to the talent gap, requiring thousands of skilled engineers, along with land and approval bottlenecks, and the sheer capital intensity of building 10 GW capacity, which demands investments upwards of $60 billion for infrastructure and nearly half a trillion dollars for GPUs.
“India’s data center journey is no longer just about scale, it’s about sustainability, sovereignty, and self-reliance. Grey water, renewable power, and a made-in-India supply chain together takes us to a future where hyperscalers find both efficiency and purpose,” he concluded.
