Pralhad Joshi Takes Charge as New Education Minister: 5 Things to Know

Pralhad Joshi has been appointed as the new Education Minister after Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down from his position following nationwide protests over the NEET-UG paper leak. 

Joshi has already been serving as the Union Cabinet Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Minister of New and Renewable Energy.

1. Early Life & Education
   

Born and brought up in Karnataka, he completed his Bachelor of Arts from KS Arts College, Hubballi and Karnataka University, Dharwad. During his academic years he developed keen interest in public issues, social services and community development. 

Before entering active politics, Joshi also ventured into entrepreneurship and social initiatives, reflecting his commitment towards employment generation and grassroots empowerment. 

2. Journey Timeline

Joshi began his political career through BJP and was further recognized by his dedication and capabilities. His active participation in the public movements and party- building initiatives helped strengthen the BJP’s presence in Karnataka. 

He worked with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and showed interest towards social issues and nationalist movements which earned him recognition. He played a prominent role in the “Save Kashmir Movement” in 1992, led the national flag hosting movement at Kittur Chennamma Circle (Idgah Maidan), Hubballi.  Later from 1995-1998 Johi served as president of BJP Dharwad district, and from 1998-2003 as a general Secretary.

In 2004 he was appointed as Member of Parliament from Dharwad in Karnataka for the first time. His responsibilities included:

• Member, Standing Committee on Chemicals & Fertilizers
• Member, Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism & Culture
• Member, Consultative Committee on Finance

He served as BJP Karnataka General Secretary (2006–2013) and became state BJP President in 2013. Re-elected in 2009 and 2014, he later chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas. After winning again in 2019, he joined the Union Cabinet as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines, and was additionally given Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in 2021. Re-elected in 2024, he took charge of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy. 

3. Achievements 

Political Career: Five‑time Lok Sabha MP from Dharwad, Karnataka, and former BJP Karnataka unit president. 

Ministerial Roles: Served as Union Minister of Coal and Mines (2019–2024), Parliamentary Affairs, and concurrently as Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs. 

Clean Energy Leadership: Spearheaded India’s clean energy push, aiming for 500 GW renewable/non‑fossil capacity by 2030 and net‑zero by 2070. 

• Oversaw flagship schemes: National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, PM‑KUSUM, and offshore wind energy projects. 
  
• Drove policy measures like annual 50 GW renewable energy bids to accelerate the energy transition 

Legislative Role: Played a key role in passing major bills such as the Abrogation of Article 370 and the Citizenship Amendment Act.

4. Vision & mission 

In his initial statements, Joshi said he accepted the role “with a sense of duty and humility” and pledged to focus on strengthening India’s education system by building on the reforms initiated under former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, particularly the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP). He also emphasized the need to undertake examination reforms to restore public trust in national testing systems, and pledged to work “to the best of my ability” under the Prime Minister’s guidance to ensure greater transparency, fairness, and quality across the education sector.

While he has not yet shared a long‑term plan, his likely immediate focus will be to stabilise the education sector during a critical reform phase, ensure transparent governance, and align education policy with India’s broader development and clean energy goals.

Pralhad Joshi’s achievements span clean energy leadership, legislative contributions, and crisis management. Now, his vision is to stabilise and reform India’s education system, with a mission centred on transparency, quality, and alignment with national priorities. 

5. Why the centre chose him

Joshi’s appointment as Union Education Minister reflects the centre’s preference for an experienced and trusted leader. As a senior BJP leader and long serving member of the Modi government, Joshi has earned the party’s confidence through his experience and abilities. His reputation for effective governance made him a natural choice to steer the Education Ministry through challenges, particularly in restoring public trust following controversies surrounding national examinations such as NEET.
