OpenAI has named Uday Ruddarraju to lead its infrastructure and computing businesses, marking another leadership change as the company expands the data centre capacity needed to develop and operate its artificial intelligence models.

Ruddarraju joined OpenAI last year after previously working at xAI. He was appointed chief technology officer for computing in July and will now take charge of the broader infrastructure and computing operations.

Sachin Katti, who had been overseeing OpenAI’s infrastructure unit, will transition out of the role over the next few weeks and remain with the company as an adviser. Katti joined OpenAI about a year ago and helped manage several major data centre projects.

These included an eight-gigawatt project in Ohio involving SB Energy and Nvidia, as well as a data centre site in Georgia that was the first to be designed and led by OpenAI.

“I’m proud of what we’ve built and have total confidence in Uday and the team to carry it forward,” Katti said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to building something new.”

Ruddarraju said Katti had done significant work in maintaining OpenAI’s commercial partnerships. “Sachin has done an incredible job maintaining the commercial partnerships,” he said. “Now I have to spend more time on the commercial side.”

The transition will not involve a wholesale change in leadership across the team. Strategy and business leaders who reported to Katti are expected to remain in their roles, providing continuity as Ruddarraju assumes responsibility for the broader unit.

Since July, Katti had also overseen GPT-Infra, an effort to use OpenAI models for tasks such as semiconductor and infrastructure development. The work includes helping customers explore the use of OpenAI models to develop central processing units and edge chips. GPT-Infra will now come under Richard Ho, OpenAI’s chip chief.

The leadership changes come as OpenAI continues to expand the physical infrastructure required to train and operate increasingly capable AI models. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has said the company could spend trillions of dollars on the infrastructure needed for future AI development.
