Ananya Birla has launched Birla Studios, a new production company focused on developing high-concept, prestige-driven commercial cinema. The venture marks the Aditya Birla Group’s formal entry into film production, building on its existing presence in content creation through Applause Entertainment, known for series such as Scam 1992 and Criminal Justice.
Birla Studios will build a multi-language slate spanning Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam, and other regional languages, alongside English-language international projects. The studio describes itself as genre-agnostic, with an emphasis on backing emerging filmmakers and new voices.
The launch comes as India’s film industry posts record box office numbers while revenues concentrate around a handful of tentpole releases, putting pressure on mid-budget films and driving consolidation across the sector.
Birla is the Founder and Chairperson of Svatantra Microfin, India’s second-largest microfinance institution. In 2025, she launched consumer brands Contraband and LOVETC under Birla Cosmetics. She also holds a strategic role within the Aditya Birla Group, serving on its apex body ABMCPL and on the boards of Hindalco, Grasim, and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail.
“We are all stories. Cinema is one of the most powerful mediums through which those stories are told. At its most powerful, cinema creates an immediate connection while leaving a lasting resonance,” said Ananya Birla, Founder, Birla Studios. “Our focus is on curating a slate of films that balance cultural significance with strong entertainment value and a conscious stand to nurture new talent, while exploring genres, amplifying fresh voices and diverse perspectives.”
