Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo on Tuesday announced the appointment of William Walsh, popularly known as Willie, as its Chief Executive Officer.

The move comes after the departure of Pieter Elbers, who stepped down as CEO on March 11 following a turbulent period marked by mass flight cancellations that disrupted travel for thousands of passengers.

Walsh, currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), brings extensive global experience. He has previously served as CEO of British Airways and the International Airlines Group, which owns multiple carriers including Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Vueling.

His tenure at IATA will conclude on July 31, 2026, and he is expected to join IndiGo by August 3, 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said, “I am thrilled that Willie will be at the helm of IndiGo. He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record of outstanding leadership across several airlines. His experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics make him ideally suited to lead IndiGo for continued growth.”

IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia added, “As we enter a new phase of transformation and growth, I am delighted to welcome Willie to IndiGo. He brings global perspective, operational expertise, and deep industry experience, making him well suited to lead the airline at this pivotal moment.”

In his new role, Walsh will oversee IndiGo’s overall management and strategic direction. He will focus on strengthening operations, expanding the network, refining commercial strategy, and improving customer experience, according to the airline.

He will also work closely with the Board and leadership team to guide IndiGo through its next phase of growth.

Walsh said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The airline has a strong foundation and a compelling vision. What stands out most to me are its people, their professionalism and commitment. I look forward to working with colleagues to build excellence, innovation, and sustainable value.”

The appointment comes at a crucial time for IndiGo, which has been working to stabilise operations and restore passenger confidence after recent disruptions. Industry observers say the leadership change could help the airline strengthen its position in both domestic and international markets, while addressing operational challenges and improving reliability in the months ahead. The transition is expected to be closely watched by stakeholders across the aviation sector in India.
