OpenAI has recently appointed Uday Ruddarraju as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), placing him at the front foot of one of the most critical functions in AI i.e., the computing infrastructure that powers frontier AI models. Uday joins a a long list of Indian executives at C- level in the tech. Looking at his credentials he brings large set of experience including his work in xAI in development of Colossus. As Chief Technology Officer of Compute, Ruddarraju is responsible for the infrastructure that enables OpenAI to train and deploy its large AI models. His role extends to large-scale data centers, GPU clusters, networking, storage, distributed systems and hardware optimization; it spans to areas that are now strategically important as AI model development itself.
- Joined OpenAI after building xAI’s Colossus supercomputer
Before joining OpenAI he served at xAI,founded by Elon Musk that focuses on developing artificial intelligence to accelerate human scientific discovery, As Head of Infrastructure Engineering. He was leading the development of Colossus, one of the world’s largest AI supercomputing clusters, designed to train xAI’s Grok models.

Uday Ruddarraju is based out of Hyderabad, he graduated from Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT) earning his bachelor’s degree in Engineering – BE, Computer Science followed by Master’s degree from University of Minnesota in Science – MS, Computer Science.
He started his career from working in eBay as a Software Engineer for more than 3 years. Later on being promoted to senior tech lead .
Later he joined Robinhood, a US based financial services company as Senior Director of Engineering & Head of Infrastructure and worked there for more than 5 Years. Followed by working as Head of Infrastructure Engineering in xAI.
In his recent LinkedIn post Uday also extended his regards amid his farewell. He mentioned “Thank you everyone at xAI for the rare opportunity to help build something truly foundational with Colossus. It was a privilege to be part of a mission this bold and to see from the inside what hardcore focus and execution really look like.”

- Mission is to build the world’s largest AI compute footprint
In his LinkedIn post following his promotion, Uday said that his team is working to build “the world’s largest compute footprint.” so frontier AI can reach everyone and every workflow. He further mentioned,” We have a very exciting compute ramp and roadmap coming up. There is a lot to build across large scale distributed systems, hardware, manufacturing, and data center builds spanning civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. We’re hiring exceptional people across the stack.”
