Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s newly established Data Centre and Cybersecurity Training Institute in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Modi said the past decade focused on bringing banking to people who were excluded from it, and the coming decade will focus on making banking more efficient and more reliable, supported by the Odisha data centre and its computing systems. He said modern warfare also targets economies through cyber threats, and that replacing outdated training tools with modern infrastructure and skilled personnel is essential, which makes the new cybersecurity institute crucial.
Highlighting financial inclusion, Modi said that more than half the population was outside the banking system until 2014. He cited nearly 60 crore Jan Dhan accounts, 13 crore first-time entrepreneurs under the Mudra Yojana, formal credit for street vendors and artisans under PM SVANidhi and PM Vishwakarma, and bank assistance for self-help groups representing 10 crore rural women. He said central government payments now reach beneficiary accounts in full.
On social security, he said the Atal Pension Yojana covers 9 crore citizens, including 38 lakhs in Odisha. The PM Suraksha Bima Yojana offers INR 2 lakh accident cover at a INR 20 annual premium, and the PM Jeevan Jyoti Yojana offers life cover for under INR 450 a year. He said over INR 25,000 crore in claims has been disbursed.
Modi also said Odisha is pairing its mineral-based industries with semiconductors, electronics, data centres and advanced computing.
“Nowadays, wars are not fought with weapons alone. A nation can also be weakened by attacking its economy. And as India grows economically stronger, we must protect our banking system from cyber looters and cyber terrorists,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
