Michael Dell has surpassed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to become the world’s third-richest person, according to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires ranking.
Dell’s estimated net worth reached USD 267.7 billion at the close of trading on Tuesday, up USD 4.6 billion in a day. Bezos’ fortune stood at USD 265.2 billion after Amazon’s stock declined.
Dell now trails Alphabet co-founder Larry Page, with an estimated fortune of USD 277.9 billion, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose wealth was estimated at USD 942 billion.
Dell’s fortune has more than doubled over the past year, supported by demand for technology infrastructure and hardware used in artificial intelligence.
Dell founded the company that became Dell Technologies while studying at the University of Texas. He started by selling computer upgrade kits from his college residence room and later shifted to a direct-sales model for PCs.
The company, initially called PC’s Limited, began with USD 1,000 in capital and was incorporated as Dell Computer Corporation in 1984. Dell later expanded into servers, storage, networking and other technology infrastructure.
In 1996, Dell began selling computers through its website. By 1997, its online sales had reached around USD 1 million a day. In 2001, Dell became the world’s largest PC maker by market share.
