Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani said India needs its own technology stack and that Jio will focus on making digital solutions affordable for a billion users, speaking at the 10th India Mobile Congress in New Delhi.

Ambani said Jio is making rapid progress on an end-to-end indigenous satellite communications stack and has demonstrated the technology to the communications minister, with the company moving ahead on regulatory approvals. He described Jio’s satellite plans as an extension of its broadband push rather than a standalone service, calling home broadband one of the technology’s biggest use cases.

He did not give a launch timeline for a satellite fleet and declined to comment on recent remarks by Elon Musk and the government’s response, saying Jio is focused on delivering value to Indian consumers.

“I think we’re building an end-to-end indigenous stack,” Ambani said, adding that satellite would help Jio extend its reach “very, very quickly” and that the technology has to be “on par with or leading the world.”

On 6G, Ambani said Jio has already begun filing patents in the pre-6G space, in line with the government’s target of 10% of global 6G patents originating from India. “Like the Prime Minister has said that we want to lead the world when it comes to 6G, and he set a target of 10 per cent of the 6G patents to be coming out of India; we’re going to contribute to that story heavily,” he said.

He also said Jio sees opportunities to use artificial intelligence to improve traditional voice and data services, which he believes would benefit Indian consumers broadly. Ambani described Jio’s upcoming IPO as “a great responsibility,” noting it will be Reliance’s first public issue in 30 years.
