Airbnb will donate USD 0.10 (INR 9.50) of its revenue per stay to Airbnb.org, which provides free, temporary housing to people in crisis. The model will provide USD 500 million (INR 4,750 crore) to the nonprofit over five years, with a goal of 1 million nights of free housing annually.

The model will not increase what guests pay or reduce host payouts, and neither needs to opt in. No donation is made for stays cancelled before check-in or for bookings of experiences or services.

Brian Chesky, Co-founder and CEO, Airbnb, said: “Now, every time someone books a home on Airbnb, they’ll help someone else find a place to stay when they need it most. That’s Airbnb at its best.”

Airbnb.org originated in 2012, when a host offered her home to people displaced by Hurricane Sandy. According to Airbnb, it has since provided more than 1.6 million nights of free housing to over 250,000 people.

Airbnb.org has responded to more than 200 disasters this year, up from eight in 2023. The new funding and additional donations will expand its work to:

  • Families travelling for medical care: Support in more than 20 countries by the end of 2026, with partners including the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia, Instituto Beaba in Brazil, B.C. Friends of Children in Canada, Fundación Xana in Spain and Children’s Miracle Network in the US.
  • Survivors of domestic violence and exploitation: A new programme of free, temporary stays, in partnership with Peace House in Utah, among others.
  • US veterans: Expanded support for veterans facing serious illness or intensive treatment, with Fisher House Foundation, Dream Foundation and Operation Healing Forces.

The nonprofit works with local nonprofits and government partners to identify people in need and gives them credits to book Airbnb listings. Guests do not pay for these stays, and hosts receive payment. Hosts can also offer discounted stays or donate part of their earnings to Airbnb.org.
