Roblox Appoints Sunil Rao as India MD

Roblox has appointed Sunil Rao as Managing Director for India, marking a step to strengthen its presence in one of its key growth markets. 

Rao, who joins the company in May, will serve as Roblox’s senior-most representative in the country and lead its overall business strategy and operations.

In his new role, Rao will focus on expanding Roblox’s local footprint, building partnerships, and supporting the platform’s growing community of developers and creators. He will also work closely with local teams to align India-specific needs with the company’s global priorities, while overseeing the day-to-day execution of its India strategy.

A key part of his mandate will be to nurture India’s creator ecosystem and help developers scale their offerings using Roblox’s tools. The company is increasingly looking to tap into India’s large base of young users and emerging game developers, as it seeks to grow its user-generated content ecosystem in the region.

Commenting on his appointment, Rao said, “Roblox is at the forefront of enabling a new generation of creators and games. India’s scale, creativity, and entrepreneurial energy present a massive opportunity.” He added, “I’m excited to build a vibrant and inclusive ecosystem that empowers developers and creators across the country.”

Rao also highlighted the importance of safety and compliance, stating, “Ensuring child safety and aligning closely with India’s regulatory framework will be among my top priorities, as we focus on building a trusted platform that enables responsible and sustainable growth in the region.”

Zhen Fang, Vice President of International at Roblox, said, “India is an important market for us globally and one with tremendous potential in terms of creator talent.” He added that Rao’s experience across global technology platforms and investor ecosystems makes him well suited to lead the company’s next phase of growth in India.

Rao brings over two decades of experience across technology, venture capital, and developer ecosystems. He previously held leadership roles at Amazon Web Services, where he led strategy and corporate development across Asia-Pacific and Japan, and at Lightspeed Venture Partners as a Partner.

Roblox currently supports millions of user-created experiences for over 144 million daily active users globally, and is continuing to expand its creator-driven model across markets like India.
