Google and community engagement platform ChangeX have launched the “Google Udaan India Fund” aimed at supporting grassroots initiatives and strengthening local communities in the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region.

The initiative is expected to empower up to 100 community-led projects focused on skill development, small business growth, and environmental sustainability.

The fund will provide financial support of up to INR 14 lakh to eligible organisations, including schools and community groups. Applications will open in the coming months, with the current deadline for submissions set for April 30.

The programme is part of a broader regional rollout across Asia, with similar initiatives planned in India, Malaysia, and Thailand. Managed by ChangeX, the fund seeks to enable local communities to implement proven ideas while also encouraging innovation tailored to local needs.

Officials said the initiative aims to move beyond conceptual support and deliver measurable outcomes in areas such as digital literacy, workforce readiness, and climate resilience. Planned interventions include the establishment of AI-powered learning labs, vocational training programmes, and projects focused on renewable energy and water conservation.

“Through this partnership, we look forward to working with communities across Visakhapatnam, and other communities in Asia, to build practical skills and deliver sustainable initiatives in areas like water stewardship and energy affordability,” said Utaukwa Allen, Global Head of Economic Development and Data Centers at Google. “We are excited to partner with ChangeX, which brings deep experience in supporting community-led action.”

“Together with Google, we’re backing community-led action in Visakhapatnam: drawing on proven ideas, while giving local changemakers the freedom to respond to local needs,” added Niamh McKenna, Co-founder and Head of Impact at ChangeX.

The fund also includes support mechanisms to help ensure successful implementation, with partner organisations working closely with communities and educational institutions.

Eligible organisations with valid FCRA certification can apply for funding for their own projects, subject to review criteria. The initiative reflects a broader push by both organisations to support sustainable development through community-driven approaches.

Founded in 2015, ChangeX operates globally, partnering with organisations and foundations to fund and scale social innovation projects across multiple regions.
