Reliance Retail has shut down all 7-Eleven convenience stores in India following the conclusion of its five-year franchise agreement with Seven & I Holdings, the Japanese parent of the US-based convenience store chain. Reliance had operated around 60 stores under the format at its peak, confined to Mumbai and Pune, before most had already closed in the lead-up to the final shutdown.
Reliance Retail launched 7-Eleven in India in October 2021 after signing a master franchise agreement with 7-Eleven Inc. “We confirm that our Master Franchisee, Reliance, which operates 7-Eleven stores in Mumbai and Pune, closed all 31 stores as of 30 September 2026,” a Seven & i Holdings spokesperson said. “At the same time, 7-Eleven International continues to strengthen its global business across existing and new markets to drive sustainable, long-term growth.”
The 7-India Convenience Retail venture recorded revenue of about INR 920 million (USD 10.6 million) and a net loss of close to INR 900 million for the financial year ended March 2026. Employees from the 7-Eleven operations are being absorbed into Reliance Retail’s broader grocery and neighbourhood retail businesses, allowing the company to retain trained manpower and operational expertise. The closure underscores the challenges facing standalone convenience store formats in India, including high rentals, thin margins and rising competition from kirana stores and quick-commerce platforms.
Reliance Retail has not made an official statement on the closure.
