Harish Bhat, one of the Tata Group’s best-known executives, has stepped down from the board of Trent, the retailer that runs Westside and Zudio, after more than 12 years. The move comes as investors await the company’s September-quarter results.

Here are five things to know about the exit, what Bhat said in his letter and which roles he continues to hold across the group.

1. Resignation Effective October 17
Bhat’s resignation letter is dated October 17, 2026, and is addressed to Trent Chairman Noel N. Tata. In its regulatory filing on October 18, Trent confirmed that the resignation was effective the same day, so the company disclosed it within a day. Bhat held the position of Non-Executive, Non-Independent Director, a category for directors who do not meet the independence criteria set out under listing norms. He joined the board in April 2014, which puts his tenure at more than 12 years. The filing did not name a successor or say how the vacancy would be filled, and none of the reports reviewed mention a replacement. Trent is likely to address the board composition in a later disclosure.

    2. Cites Professional, Personal Commitments
Trent said Bhat resigned because of his existing and growing professional and personal commitments. The filing offered no other reason. Some commentary has speculated about shifting dynamics within the Tata Group, but nothing in the company’s disclosure supports that reading, and any such interpretation remains speculation. Bhat is 63 and continues to hold board positions elsewhere in the group, so the stated reason points to a reallocation of his time rather than a complete exit from Tata-backed businesses. Board seats at listed companies involve regular meetings, committee work and preparation, which is the kind of workload that tends to be reviewed when a director’s other responsibilities expand.

    3. Letter Praises Board and Chairman
In the letter, Bhat requested that his resignation be accepted and thanked the board for the opportunity to contribute to Trent’s governance and strategic direction. “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve on the Board of Trent Ltd. for the past several years, and to participate actively in the deliberations of the Board,” he wrote. He also acknowledged Noel Tata’s leadership, which he said was instrumental in the company’s growth and transformation, and wished the company continued success. The tone of the letter is cordial and does not refer to any disagreement. Trent’s growth over the period, driven by Westside and the faster expansion of Zudio, falls within the years Bhat served on the board.

    4. Stays on Other Tata Boards
Bhat continues as a director at Tata Starbucks Private and at Infiniti Retail, the company behind the Croma electronics chain. Tata Starbucks is the group’s cafe business in India, operated through its joint venture with Starbucks. His earlier roles within the group include managing director of Tata Global Beverages, chief operating officer at Titan and brand custodian at Tata Sons. His retail and consumer background has been closely tied to several Tata consumer-facing businesses, and his continued board roles at Tata Starbucks and Infiniti Retail mean he stays connected to the group’s retail and food-and-beverage operations even after leaving Trent.

    5. Exit Comes Before Q2 Results
Trent operates retail brands including Westside and Zudio and is part of the Tata Group. Reports cite revenue growth of 23% for Q2 FY27, and investors had been waiting for the full results when the resignation was disclosed. Zee Business reported that Trent shares fell about 3% following the announcement. The filing does not say whether the share price move was linked to the resignation, and board changes at large listed companies are often read alongside results and sentiment in the broader market. Investors are likely to watch the company’s next disclosures for any update on board composition, alongside the performance of its core retail brands.
