Amazon Web Services (AWS) has broken ground on a new data centre in Hyderabad, marking the expansion of its AWS (Asia Pacific) Hyderabad Region as part of Amazon’s planned $21 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in India between 2026 and 2030.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held alongside Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, underscores Amazon’s broader commitment to strengthening India’s digital infrastructure amid growing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

The cloud investment forms part of Amazon’s recently announced $48 billion investment plan for India, with nearly half earmarked for expanding cloud infrastructure. AWS said the investment will increase data centre capacity in Hyderabad and Mumbai, providing startups, enterprises and government organisations with access to advanced cloud services, AI technologies, custom AI chips and developer tools.

“The foundation stone laying for the Amazon Web Services data centre in Bharat Future City will serve as a stepping stone for a wide range of investments and businesses to invest in Telangana,” said A. Revanth Reddy, Chief Minister of Telangana, adding that the state is building world-class infrastructure to support future industries.

AWS launched its Hyderabad cloud infrastructure region in 2022 and has invested more than $1.3 billion in the region through the end of 2025.

“Since launching AWS infrastructure in Hyderabad, we have continued to invest in sustainable cloud data centre operations to support Digital India and the India AI Mission,” said Anurag Khilnani, Director of Data Centre Delivery at AWS. He added that the company plans to continue investing in the state’s local supply chain, workforce and community.

Telangana’s Minister for Information Technology and Industries, D. Sridhar Babu, said AWS’ decision to expand its data centre footprint reinforces the state’s ambition of becoming India’s AI and cloud capital.

Beyond infrastructure, AWS is also investing in workforce development through its Amazon Data Centre Skilling Program. The initiative has trained 250 students in Telangana in data centre operations, with 110 graduates hired into AWS’ data centre operations team.

The skilling programme is part of AWS’ broader effort to develop cloud talent in India. Since 2017, the company says it has trained more than 10 million people across the country through initiatives such as AWS Skill Builder, AWS Educate and AWS re/Start.

AWS said the Hyderabad expansion reflects its long-term commitment to supporting India’s digital economy, AI ecosystem and next-generation cloud infrastructure while creating employment opportunities and strengthening the country’s technology capabilities.
