Merchant commerce platform Pine Labs has launched Pine Labs Payment Protocol (P3P), a new agentic platform that can complete a UPI payment without human authentication. The company claims it is also India’s first autonomous agentic payment setup.
The P3P extends UPI’s existing mandate framework, through UPI one time mandates and reserve pay, into payments triggered by AI agents. In this scenario, a customer authorises once and upfront and after that the agent browses, selects, negotiates and pays. After the initial authorization, there is no human intervention in the following processes.
“P3P provides the payment and settlement rails for autonomous commerce. Grantex provides verifiable identity, delegated authorization, spend controls, and auditability. HTTP 402 — an open web standard for machine-readable payment requests — provides a standardised protocol for discovering and requesting payment. Together, they enable trusted, secure, and auditable agent-to-agent transactions on behalf of merchants without requiring human intervention,” the company said in a blog post.
“Grantex allows the consumer to be in absolute control — checking agent identity, enforcing pre-approved spending limits, and creating a full audit trail for every payment. The consumer can revoke or update the mandate at any time. Compliance is not an afterthought — it is built into the protocol layer. No guardrails, no payment,” it added.
Pine Labs’ P3P is also live at select merchants. On digital gold savings platform Gullak, a user can set a rule like “buy INR 500 of gold if the prices drop below INR 16,000 per gram” and approve a UPI mandate once. If the scenario matches, the AI agent automatically makes the purchase.
The technology is also available at Vijay Sales. Pine Labs says it’s deploying the agentic payment platform across retail, fintech, travel, and beyond. Further partner announcements will follow.
“Electronics buyers in India are highly value-conscious — they are always waiting for the right deal or the right price drop,” says Karan Gupta, Managing Director, Vijay Sales. “P3P fundamentally alters this dynamic. Instead of a customer constantly checking back for discounts on a smartphone or refrigerator, they can now deploy an AI agent to secure that product the moment it hits their target price. It’s like giving every customer a personal shopper who never misses a deal.”
Back in December 2025, Pine Labs through Setu had introduced an agentic bill payments experience. The agentic AI was capable of fetching all bills in real-time, checking bills for unusual charges, paying using pre-blocked funds, following the limits and approvals users set and tracking spending patterns and sharing helpful insights. The feature was rolled out to Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT initially.
Prior to Pine Labs’ agentic bill feature, India’s NPCI which operates UPI, fintech firm Razorpay and AI firm OpenAI joined hands to introduce an agentic AI-driven payments system. Backed by banking partners Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, the setup allowed an AI agent to check the catalog at the partner merchant, serve users alternatives, and after users’ consent, the agent places the order via Razorpay’s payments stack.
