Tata Communications plans to invest USD 400–450 million (INR 3,540–3,983 crore) to build an AI superhighway in India, a high-speed, low-latency fibre network connecting the country’s key AI data centre corridors. The company will lay about 10,000 km of new long-haul fibre, integrated with its global network backbone.
The network is aimed at global hyperscalers, AI platforms, neo-cloud providers and enterprises. It will be built in three phases. The first covers the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor. Later phases will extend to East Coast and Western India data centre ecosystems, including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and GIFT City, and link clusters with international cable landing stations.
Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, MD and CEO, Tata Communications, said: “We are excited about the opportunity in the India data centre-to-data centre connectivity, which we believe could evolve into a market exceeding USD 1 billion [~₹8,850 crore] over the medium term.” He added: “As we scale, a growing proportion of our expansion is being driven by anchor customer commitments and contracted demand, providing a strong foundation for sustainable growth, efficient capital deployment and long-term value creation.”
The company will also scale its existing National Long Distance and metro network to support current enterprise and data centre needs.
Tata Communications operates over 500,000 km of subsea optical fibre and 200,000 km of terrestrial fibre. In June 2026, it announced plans for a new Mumbai-Singapore subsea cable. It is also a consortium member in a Chennai-Singapore subsea cable, expected to be ready for service in Q4 2029.
