Lam Research Breaks Ground on New Oregon Lab to Accelerate AI-Era Semiconductor R&D

Lam Research Corp. has commemorated the start of construction on a new lab at its R&D center in Tualatin, Oregon, part of a planned USD 3 billion investment in its global lab network over the next five years to advance AI chip development.
The 120,000-square-foot facility, located in Oregon’s Silicon Forest, is expected to increase cleanroom lab space at the Tualatin center by more than 50% once completed. It will support advanced deposition and etch process development, materials science, and hardware validation, with customers working on-site alongside Lam engineers through each phase of product development.
The groundbreaking was attended by Lam Research President and CEO Tim Archer, Executive Vice President and COO Sesha Varadarajan, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, U.S. Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read, and senior leaders from Intel and Micron Technology.
Projected to open in 2028, the expansion is expected to create approximately 900 jobs and USD 500 million in economic output over its three-year construction period, according to a third-party assessment. Once complete, it is projected to add more than 400 new Lam jobs, bring the number of jobs Lam supports statewide to more than 11,000, and increase the company’s annual economic contribution in Oregon to more than USD 1.8 billion.
“Our new advanced Oregon lab is expected to deepen our specialized capabilities and add tens of thousands of square feet of valuable cleanroom space, enabling even closer collaboration with customers while strengthening the expertise and reach of our global lab network,” said Sesha Varadarajan, EVP and COO, Lam Research.
“Intel has enjoyed close collaboration with Lam in Oregon and around the world for decades,” said Naga Chandrasekaran, EVP and Chief Technology and Operations Officer, Intel Foundry. “With this new lab facility, we look forward to working even more closely together to accelerate process development at chip scale.”
