Google has announced five sustainability initiatives in India covering rooftop solar, clean energy, climate-smart agriculture, climate technology research and climate-tech startups.
As part of the initiatives, Google’s Solar API will provide rooftop solar insights for more than 300 million rooftops across India. The technology uses AI and imagery to help installers assess solar potential without an on-site visit.
Google has also signed a long-term agreement with ReNew Power for a 150-megawatt solar project in Rajasthan. The project will bring Google’s total Scope 3-focused solar capacity through its ReNew partnerships in India to 300 megawatts.
In Telangana, Google is partnering with Mitti Labs to help rice farmers adopt Alternate Wetting and Drying practices. The initiative is aimed at reducing methane emissions from rice cultivation and lowering water use.
The Google Center for Climate Technology, launched in partnership with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser, has selected three initial projects focused on green workforce training and low-carbon construction materials. It will also add water stewardship and waste and circularity as new focus areas.
Google has also announced the inaugural cohort of its Google DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet, featuring four Indian startups working on climate-related applications of AI.
