OpenAI has announced the appointment of Prabhjeet Singh, former President of Uber India and South Asia, as its first Managing Director for India, reinforcing the company’s long-term commitment to one of its fastest-growing and most strategic markets globally.

Singh will join OpenAI in September and report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for Asia Pacific. As the company’s most senior leader in India, he will be responsible for driving OpenAI’s performance across consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations.

His mandate will also include strengthening partnerships across industries and supporting India’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem, while helping consumers, businesses, institutions, and government organizations unlock the transformative potential of artificial intelligence.

The appointment is part of OpenAI’s continued investment in India, which has emerged as one of the company’s top-priority markets globally and its second-largest market after the United States.

Prior to joining OpenAI, Singh served as President of Uber India and South Asia, where he led the company’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Singh brings extensive leadership experience in scaling technology businesses and building large consumer platforms in emerging markets.

The leadership appointment represents another major milestone in OpenAI’s expansion strategy in India. The company opened its first office in New Delhi in 2025 and has since announced plans to establish additional offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

OpenAI has steadily expanded its local leadership team and ecosystem engagement. In 2024, the company appointed former Truecaller and Meta executive Pragya Misra to lead public policy and partnerships, later elevating her role to Head of Strategy and Global Affairs. The company also brought on former Twitter India head Rishi Jaitly as a senior adviser to support engagement with policymakers and government stakeholders.

Over the past year, OpenAI has forged partnerships across higher education, enterprise technology, digital payments, AI-powered commerce, and content platforms. The company has also become increasingly involved in India’s growing data center ecosystem. Major Indian conglomerates including Reliance Industries and Tata Group are among OpenAI’s early strategic partners in the country.

To support its rapid growth trajectory, OpenAI has significantly expanded hiring in India, with roles spanning AI deployment, developer experience, partner management, marketing, and enterprise solutions.

India has become a key battleground for global AI companies, driven by its vast developer community, more than a billion internet users, and accelerating adoption of generative AI technologies. Competitors are also strengthening their presence in the country. Anthropic established its India operations in Bengaluru in late 2025 and recently appointed former Microsoft India Managing Director Irina Ghose as its India Head.

With Prabhjeet Singh taking charge of India operations, OpenAI is poised to deepen its engagement with businesses, developers, policymakers, and institutions while accelerating AI adoption across one of the world’s most dynamic digital economies.
